OUR MISSION

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of injury and death in children. The mission of Safe Kids Cleveland County is to "reduce these accidental injuries through a combination of advocacy, engineering, and enforcement."

Safe Kids Cleveland County is one of more than 600 coalitions affiliated with Safe Kids Worldwide, an organization whose mission is to prevent accidental childhood injury. Our coalition is comprised of local government, health and safety agencies, educators, businesses and individuals dedicated to this mission and began as an effort to reduce childhood injuries and deaths that were occurring in our county. Dr. Mike Barringer, Trauma Surgeon and founding leader of Safe Kids Cleveland County, stated, "I want to work myself out of a job. I don't want to tell parents anymore that they have lost a child to a preventable injury."

WHAT WE DO

Our coalition works all year focusing on:

SAFETeens Think First, an interactive 3 hour program given to all Drivers’ Ed classes in Cleveland County that teaches about cause and effect of thinking before you make a critical decision.
Kid Tips a curriculum on safety taught to 1^st graders during an 8 week period, and then each child is fitted and given a bicycle helmet.
Child Passenger Safety events and initiatives, which are held throughout the year and in conjunction with local Fire Departments and Health Care affiliates to provide education on car seat safety.
Operation Medicine Drops- We partner with local law enforcement and Health Departments to host medicine take back events to keep prescription drugs out of our kid’s hands.
We also participate at other events that feature child safety education or promotion during the year.
STOP The Bleed- Interactive course to lay person on bleeding control and tourniquet application
Hot Car Awareness, Water Safety, Bike Safety, Etc.
